With the words of the late Nobel Peace Prize winner and former Chancellor, Willy Brandt, let us remember the tragic story of the plane crash on the night of 16th to 17th of May 1943 in Heeren-Herken, in which the seven crew members of the British bomber of the Lancaster type III (Dambusters) met their death in our neighbourhood. The goal of their mission was to blow up the dams, but ultimately it was to end an increasingly senseless war that had brought much suffering throughout Europe. In this even, we want to remember today's friendly relationship between our countries, which were then enemies with the inauguration of this memorial stone.
