The Pre-Raphaelite collection at Manchester City Art Gallery, on which this book is based, consists of over 100 paintings and watercolours and includes such world-famous pictures as Ford Madox Brown's Work, Holman Hunt's The Hireling Shepherd and Shadow of Death, Millais' Autumn Leaves, and Rossetti's Astarte Syriaca. In addition to such well-known masterpieces, the Gallery has over the years acquired a host of other works so that the collection has become one of the foremost of its kind in the world.
