The genus Lycopersicon has for several decades been considered economic importance of one of its species, L. esculentum Mill., the common tomato. More recently the other species of the genus have become the objects of great interest in programs of tomato breeding for the purpose of developing disease-resistant strains of commercially desirable tomatoes.
