註釋
Jimmy understands all about belonging and not belonging. He sees himself as part of both sides of the moon; '...kind of blackman, sort of nigger, in my own country, and kind of white, sort of The Man, but the other half of me. I am torn yet I am more whole since I am both...' He is part of a fractured family, and it's only when he learns about his forebear - a brave warrior who became an outcast from his tribe - that he begins to understand the darker implications of his heritage. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Alan Duff was born in Rotorua in 1950 and now lives in Havelock North with his wife and four of his children. He has published three previous novels (Once Were Warriors, One Night Out Stealing and What Becomes of the Broken Hearted?), a novella (State Ward) and non-fiction work (Maori: The Crisis and the Challenge). Once Were Warriors won the PEN Best First Book for Fiction Award and was made into an internationally acclaimed film for which he wrote the original screenplay. What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? won the fiction category of the Montana Book Awards in 1997. Alan is a full-time writer and has a weekly newspaper column syndicated nationally in New Zealand. He has also written screenplays. SELLING POINTS *** Critics on Once Were Warriors: 'This is the Haka, the rage of a people who, yes, once were warriors...A kick to the guts of New Zealand's much-vaunted pride in its Meori/Pakeha race relations. A breathless fearless debut' WITI IHIMAER A 'Alan Duff's first novel bursts upon the literary landscape with all the noise and power of a new volcano.' MICHAEL GIFKINS, NZ LISTENER *** Critics on What Becomes of the Broken Hearted?: 'This is a far better book than the much lauded Warriors. It deserves an audience for its robust humour and sophisticated subtlety...Jake's grim progress is painful, hard-earned, not happy ever after. But there is a particular optimism amid the blood and guts of jails, gangs, drugs and nihilistic hatreds. And - all the more powerful becuase of the savagery they've sprung from - universal truths to be savoured for their poetic insight.' MURRAY WALDRON, THE AUSTRALIAN 'A powerful, authentic, moving, brilliantly written and profound novel, a masterwork...A profound and passionate novel...a memorable experience.' SPIRO ZAVOS, THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD 'A brilliant work...poetic and full of hope.' CANBERRA TIMES 'Alan Duff is back, more brilliant than ever...What Becomes of the Broken Herated? picks up were Once Were Warriors left off, and carries the story on with doubled brilliance. The new book is just as dynamic, just as in-your-face as the first one, but less violent, more layered, more fundamentally thoughtful and challenging...' NZ LISTENER ***Both Sides of the Moon takes up many of the themes in Once Were Warriors and What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? The themes of displacement and the clash between indigenous culture and white society should strike alot of chords here. It couldn't be more timely. ***Once Were Warriors has sold over 50,000 copies in Australia, and both editions of What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? have sold 17,000 copies. Over a million people saw the film Once Were Warriors at the cinema, and millions watched it on TV recently. Alan is currently working on the film of What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? which will get masses of attention when released.
