Addressing Student Retention at Hampton University
註釋Hampton University has begun to pay attention to the difficulties many students have transitioning from high school to college. The University remains faithful to the traditional commitment of coping with the problems of educating students whose potential and promise may have been inhibited by lack of economic, social, and/or educational opportunity. It is the practice of the University to enroll promising students from outstanding secondary schools and to provide an opportunity for a limited number of them to experience higher education notwithstanding that they may not have excelled in high school. With this in mind, establish support systems for those students who may need assistance so they may be retained. This EPP project was designed to determine how to increase the retention rate of students at Hampton University and steps the University may take to assist students with specific needs. The questions for this project are: Question 1: What are some non-cognitive variables that might have an influence on retention of students who attend Hampton's Pre-College Program? Question 2: What are some of the cognitive variables that might influence retention of students who attend the Program? Question 3: Based on the answers to questions one and two, what steps can Hampton University take to improve its retention rates? The project will be presented in three papers. Paper One includes descriptions of Hampton University and the Pre-College Program of the University. College student retention studies and theories are also included in this paper. These studies provided the major conceptual guide for this project. Paper Two describes the methodology used in the collection of data for this project and provides an in-depth description of the findings. Paper Three discusses the recommendations and limitations associated with this project.
