Improving Traffic Operations and Safety at Exit Gore Areas
註釋This research project was concerned with the problem of erratic maneuvers, such as backing up and stopping in the gore area, that occur with alarming frequency at freeway exit areas. Initially, a state-of-the-art summary was prepared from a thorough review of past and current research in six areas: geometric design; traffic characteristics; accidents; human factors; signing; and delineation. The summary is presented as a series of "lessons learned" in each of the six categories. nine exit sites; incorporating different geometric features, were examined for erratic maneuvers during this project. Analyses of the patterns of erratic maneuvers and on-site driver interviews were used to determine causative factors of these maneuvers.
