As a child in the Krakow ghetto, he narrowly avoided death before escaping with his parents and beginning a perilous life on the run. The family was eventually captured, placed in a forced march to Auschwitz, escaped and hid until the war ended. Arriving in Australia with little education and even less English (knowing French, Italian, Polish and Russian was of little help), Haber immediately put the horrors of Europe behind him and launched himself into his new life.
