註釋Chs. 12-13 (p. 346-401) describe the difficulties faced by Romanian Zionist youth movements during the Holocaust. On 14 March 1938 buildings used by the Hehalutz umbrella organization were raided; the hachsharah farms run by Hehalutz were closed, and the participants were arrested, allegedly for spreading communism. In June the hachsharah farms were allowed to reopen, in order to prepare Jews for emigration to Eretz Israel, and in spring-summer 1939 many of the movement leaders indeed emigrated. After the outbreak of war, activities of the Zionist movements were severely limited, restricted mainly to helping Jews emigrate.
