註釋
There is growing concern about sustainable land use in Sub-Saharan Africa. Farmers have little room to manoeuvre, as most of the land available for farming is already being cultivated and yields are declining in many areas. When fallow land is cultivated, yields need to increase to support the growing population. There are major constraints on intensifying agricultural production, however, and many soils in Sub-Saharan Africa suffer from inherently low fertility. The continent is dominated by geologically old, usually deeply weathered landscapes, and over time nutient reserves have been leached from the soil and lost to agriculture. If we see plant nutrients stored in the soil as a form of natural capital, then many Africa farmers are much poorer than their counterparts on other continents and face even greater challenges in maintaining agricultural productivity. Any attempts to increase productivity will require both a thorough understanding of the situation and animaginative use of all the available resources.
