註釋Traces various aspects of the Judas figure as used in Nazi propaganda, which based its portrayal to a large extent on the Jewish stereotype elaborated in "Der Stürmer". Argues that the polemical writings that appeared in "Der Stürmer" in 1927-44 reflect the continuous use of the Judas myth to foment antisemitism. "Der Stürmer" vilified the Jews racially in a way that turned each Jew into a "Judas", and at the same time attributed racially vilifying traits to the figure of Judas, which turned him into the prototype of a Jew. Discusses how anti-Jewish prejudice was reinforced by Nazi elaboration of the Judas figure, the role demonization played in this process, and the development of the classical Judas motifs of greed, treason, and suicide. Ch. 1 (p. 25-167), "Die 'Vorgeschichte': Vom Neuen Testament bis zu den Anfängen des modernen Antisemitismus", discusses the Judas character in the New Testament and the effect his portrayal had in antiquity, in the Middle Ages, and in Germany in the late 19th-early 20th centuries.
