Molony has left behind a once promising soccer career and a woman, Mi-Young, in Seoul. He ends up in New Haven with a friend who has similarly escaped their hardscrabble roots in Worcester. She introduces him to the darker side of affluence and social climbing, including Esmerelda Legere, an unstable woman living off a trust fund who is also deeply into the occult. Out of boredom, Esmerelda develops a dangerous fixation on Molony. A different football club offers Molony the chance to return to Seoul and Mi-Young, but not before Esmerelda has her say.
