註釋Police independence is a common law and constitutional principle that governs the relationship between the police and the government, including the responsible Minister. This document examines the scope of police independence, the legal status of the doctrine and whether and how concerns about governmental interference in criminal investigations should factor into the structure of an arm's-length review mechanism for the national security operations of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
