The use of pictorial computer input as opposed to mathematical or numerical input for generating models of three-dimensional objects has wide application, for example, in computer-aided design and in robot type applications. It is, however, an extremely difficult problem to develop computer procedures for such three-dimensional perception. As a step toward the solution of this problem, a procedure has been developed for obtaining three-dimensional geometric descriptions of simply-connected polyhedra from sets of two or more of the polyhedra's perspective projections. The use of multiple projections tends to eliminate the ambiguities inherent in reconstruction from a single projection. However, it introduces the complicated problem of correlating the features in the different projections. The procedure developed here requires only that the centers of projection be outside the convex hull of the object set, thus freeing the user from ungainly location and orientation restrictions. It also provedes tests for determining the quality of the reconstruction. The quality is dependent on the content of the available projections. Criterial are also given for specifying useful additional projections in applications where new projections can be generated and added to the original set of projections. (Author).
