Every poem here is a proposal, rough estimates by a stonemason, trying to find a framework and a music in his work through his words. Each strains to reach the elemental simplicity of picking up a stone and placing it on the wall. Maloney writes: These are not the observations of a laborer, or a writer laboring to find the right nomenclature -- these poems are trying to have an immediacy, like they were written in the front seat of a dump truck.
