註釋
Conrad Wise Chapman (1842-1910) is unique among Civil War artists: he painted & sketched while on duty as a Confed. soldier & served in 3 theaters of the war. His firsthand knowledge is evident in his work. This is a critical study of Chapman's art & a biography, incorporating Chapman's correspondence & Civil memoirs. In 1861, Conrad enlisted in the Confederate army, serving in the West, Virginia & Charleston. He completed a series of 31 painting of Charleston as well as other Civil War-related pictures familiar to historians. In 1867 he wrote his memoirs of his days as a soldier. After the war, Chapman spent 18 months in Mexico, the first Amer. artist to paint that country's landscape. He spent the remainder of his life in Europe, Mexico, & the U.S.
