註釋This volume examines a set of policy questions central to the forthcoming legislative review of financial services regulation. It contains three papers, the first of which examines the link between concentration, competition, and profitability, with particular attention to the role of the major banks within Canada's financial services industry. This paper discusses the concept of efficiency as it pertains to financial markets and reviews two types of evidence bearing on the issue of market power. The second paper examines the current structure of the Canadian payments system and notes the problems with that structure, including its restricting of the ability of market demand to promote development of alternative settlement technologies. The third paper focuses on retail financial services in an environment of rapidly changing technologies which poses a significant challenge to regulators. It argues for a change in regulatory emphasis toward protecting consumer interests.
