What is the Experience of Romantic Love?
註釋[Abstract] The psychological research project grew out of the researcher's long time personal and professional interest in the experience of romantic love. The question was: "What is the experience of romantic love?" A heuristic research model in psychology was used to study the essence of the experience of romantic love. The heuristic paradigm involves learning through the self and focuses on intersubjective states and the wholeness of experience. The review of literature revealed that previous psychological research concucted on romantic love utilized primarily quantitative paradigms, yeilding fragmented results which did not capture the essence of the lived experience. An open-ended interview format was used in order to gather depictive portrayals from the six participants. In addition, the researcher gathered data from his own experiences of romantic love, which were recorded by journaling. The data collected revealed ten patterns which depicted the essence of the experience of romantic love, as follows: vulnerability, oneness, sexual attraction, well-being, rhythmical movement in intensity, creating special moments, longing, tuning out the world, intense feelings and intrusive thinking. In re-examining the patterns, there emerged three central themes which further explicated the nature and meaning of romantic love, namely: heightened awareness of self, orientation toward the beloved, and movement. A synthesis was developed that depicted the essence of the romantic love experience. Application and implications were discussed which included suggestions of how the results of this psychological research could be used in psychotherapy and education. Recommendations were also made for further research.
