Epistemology and Ethnography in Health Systems Research
註釋When researchers decide on the most appropriate research method and data collection procedures, they have to consider not only their research questions but also their assumptions about what constitutes evidence. Making explicit the underlying epistemology at the start of a research project can help researchers identify the most apt method and can assist in illuminating the limitations of proposed data collection methods. In this case study, we describe ethnographic research that was conducted to investigate the organization of care for suicide attempters in a hospital. The case study is used to illustrate how epistemology determines method and how epistemology is made visible through data collection procedures. The case study also illustrates how ethnographic research can be used in health systems research.
