Diplomatic correspondence with the king of Portugal between 1651 and 1658
註釋Unsigned, undated ms. copies, possibly 18th-century, of Portuguese diplomatic correspondence written between Jan. 21, 1651 and Feb. 16, 1658 to the Portuguese king by his ambassador to Rome, Francisco Coutinho de Sousa. Letters, most of which are addressed "Senhor", are copied onto long folios, with date of letter and, in some cases, a brief note, appearing in the side margins. Texts are neatly transcribed throughout in a thin, graceful hand, in--for the most part--a chronological order. During the 1640's, Sousa Coutinho had served as Portugal's ambassador to Denmark and Sweden, the United Provinces of Holland, and France, and now as ambassador to Rome, his letters contain thorough and straightforward description of political, religious, and economic events in Europe, especially in Spain, France, and Holland. Historical persons, whose names figure prominently in the letters, include the Conde de Brianna, Cardinal Mazarin, Marquês de Niza, Antonio de Sousa de Macedo, Padre Antonio Vieira, Gaspar de Faria, Padre Fr. Diogo Cezar, Conde de Odemira, and Residente Christovão Soares.
