As part of its work in developing the technology for the disposal of Canada's nuclear fuel waste, Atomic Energy of Canada analysed the performance of a hypothetical disposal facility that incorporates specific design choices for the engineered barriers which isolate the waste and that assumes a specific geological setting. The results of this analysis can be used to provide insight into the performance of the various components that comprise the multibarrier geological disposal system and insight into how changes in the performance of specific components can affect the overall performance of the system. This report discusses these aspects of the postclosure analysis, including the geological setting, the location of the disposal vault relative to the fracture zone, the impact of barrier failure, the impact of design changes, the effect of an excavation damage zone, and the effect of other fractures.
