註釋
DG Environment's News Alert Service "Science for Environment Policy" (SfEP) was established to contribute to a better use of new scientific evidence during environmental policy formulation and implementation processes, as well as to increase the understanding of environmental issues within the wider scientific community. Established in January 2006, and now with a readership of more than 12,000 readers, the news alert service has been assessed by external contractors The Evaluation Partnership (TEP). Originally contracted to Bio Intelligence Service, in November 2007, the Science Communication Unit (SCU) at the University of the West of England, Bristol was awarded the contract for the continuation of the service. SCU has since overseen a 90% increase in subscriber numbers, from 6,149 in December 2007 to over 12,000, in addition to implementing new features, such as the thematic issues covering topical issues of particular policy relevance in more detail and a re-designed website. Though the steady growth in subscribers and internal reports developed by the SCU suggest that the service has been highly successful, with the contract coming to an end in November 2010 DG ENV is presented with the opportunity to re-launch the call for tender with an aim to fine-tune SfEP's objectives and strategy, leading to a more relevant and robust service meant to feed into the policy-making process effectively. The evaluation was commissioned against this backdrop, and had the following objectives: To assess the potential impact of the service to policy development work; To gain a better understanding of current and potential audiences; To benchmark the service against other news alert services providing environment policy relevant scientific information; To define possible scenarios for the future development of the news alert service.
