In 1993, the Commission of the European Communities (Directorate-General V : Employment, Industrial relations, Social affairs) commissioned, in the context of the European Year of Older People and Solidarity between Generations, a study on social protection, an overview of the existing institutional arrangements, an assessment of the way in which countries differ in their treatment of similar categories of dependent older people, and an overview of present policy discussions on social protection in later life.
