註釋Based on documentation, discusses the pogrom in Iaşi on 29-30 June 1941. On 27 June Ion Antonescu ordered the deportation of the 45,000 Iaşi Jews to camps in the south; the order did not come from the Germans, although Antonescu knew he would have German backing. This was the beginning of Antonescu's plan to rid Romania of its Jews. To facilitate this step he declared the Jews of Iaşi to be Soviet collaborators. His instructions to kill Jews who "attacked the army" gave the soldiers and police a free hand. Describes arrests, murders, and robberies; a massacre of ca. 5,000 Jews at police headquarters, in which German soldiers also took part; the fate of Jews deported on the death trains, in which thousands died; murders in nearby towns; conditions in Iaşi after the pogrom; and an attempted cover-up by the Romanian government, which blamed the Germans for the pogrom. Between 12-14,000 Jews died in Iaşi or on the deportation trains.
