註釋This qualitative study examines the development impact of remittances, with a focus on the gender dimension. It considers the case of migration from Vicente Noble, a rural community in the south-west of the Dominican Republic, to Spain. This area was chosen as it gave rise to the first migratory flows to Spain, predominantly female-led, with women migrating as the main economic providers for their households. It looks at the theoretical context to the study including the feminisation of migration; the historical context of Dominican migration; the migration process including the creation of transnational households and female migratory networks; the sending, receipt, use and management of remittances and changes in gender roles brought about by ths; the sending and receipt of collective remittances and the extent to which these support local development initiatives.
