註釋Pp. 7-59 relate the background to the deportation of Hungarian Jews to Austria. In June 1944, most of Hungary's Jews were in the process of being deported to the extermination camps. According to an agreement between Adolf Eichmann and Rudolf Kasztner, ca. 20,000 Jews were held as "hostages"; they were deported instead to the internment camp at Strasshof an der Nord, in Austria, from where they were sent for forced labor. Families were allowed to stay together, but the elderly and the sick were deported from there to Auschwitz. Of those who remained, ca. 75% survived; they were liberated by the Soviet army in spring 1945. Pp. 60-243 contain the testimonies of former inmates of Strasshof, based mainly on recorded interviews found in the Moreshet archives and translated from Hungarian.
