註釋
Johnny Smith is one of the most important, though often overlooked, guitarists of the bebop era. His flawless right-hand technique, advanced harmonic concepts and intricate knowledge of classical and jazz improvisational practices came together to bridge the gap between the swing and bebop schools of jazz guitar. Due to his early retirement from the music industry, and the advent of hard-bop and fusion jazz, the music of Johnny Smith has never been fully studied in an academic fashion. This paper provides the first in depth look at the improvisational techniques Smith used during the years 1948-1958 when he recorded for the Royal Roost record label. For many years these recordings were out of print and not readily available but were recently released in a limited printing by the Mosaic record label.
