註釋British Columbia metal mines are regulated by a variety of provincial and federal government agencies that are coordinated under the provincial Mine Development Assessment Process (MDAP). This study evaluates the regulation of 15 proposed and operating metal mines in B.C. based on interviews with 63 government regulators, mining company executives, and public interest groups. The mines sample includes half the producing mines reviewed under the MDRP from 1984-90 and one quarter of the projects under review in 1990. Study participants identified issues associated with coordination of federal and provincial agencies, adequacy of government personnel, public participation, monitoring, follow-up, wildlife protection, and integrated land use planning. These issues were analyzed based on the responses of participants and a review of relevant governmental documentation. The report discusses the results of the analysis and makes recommendations where shortcomings are identified.
