註釋Ecuador, the world's largest banana-exporting country and producer of roughly one quarter of all bananas exported to the European Union and the United States, fails to protect the labor rights of its banana workers. Human Rights Watch found that adults fear dismissal if they attempt to exercise their right to organize, and children as young as eight work long hours on banana plantations in hazardous conditions. The investigation revealed that child workers are exposed to toxic pesticides, use sharp knives and machetes, haul heavy loads of bananas, drink unsanitary water, and, in some cases, experience sexual harassment.
