Songs of David
註釋David's name is mentioned in the scriptures one thousand and eighty-five times. The story of his life is one of the greatest of adventures and exploits. We find that he has great favor even when he is ignored and sidelined in his youth. Even so he becomes the "chosen one". His public introduction to the nation is when he brings deliverance and victory by accepting Goliath's challenge and defeating him with the unlikeliest of weapons. It is by the favor and anointing of God that he is enabled, and not by mere, natural abilities or talents. But his life is also marked by great persecution and constant threats against him. Around him gather, not the elite of the nation, but rather those who are in debt or in some kind of other trouble or distress. They rally around David who is also, himself, on the run, and they are prepared to follow him, protect and fight for him at the danger of their own lives. Now there are those who even question whether there actually was such a person or whether he is simply a myth. Even today the existence of David, his memory and historicity are questioned. Just as King Saul attempted to wipe out this one who had become such a threat to him, there are still those who want to erase his name and very memory from the record. David is vitally important to both the Jew and the Christian believer. For both he is a pivotal figure in scripture and in the faith that they both hold dear. We are told that the LORD proclaims that David is "a man after my own heart". This is God's reason for his choice of this youngest son of Jesse. The scripture says that He has "found the son of Jesse" to be the one who is in line with what He Himself has in His own heart. This has been my quest in this search for who this man is. What was it that prompted God to both notice David and then to make him His special choice? What was it that made him someone to be spoken of in this way? What was it about his thoughts and feelings? What were his motivations? How did he feel about what was going on in his time and how did these things make him respond? Scripture relates about the dealings and interactions of God and mankind, and in the search of them I would encounter greater spiritual enlightenment, change and development in my own life. The many psalms that David wrote were songs and prayers to the LORD. They reveal what David knew about the very character of the LORD. They contain pleas for God to act and intervene in the world and the lives of the good and the bad, the innocent and the guilty. There are also great mysteries that David knew and that are revealed in his writings. In my work of word-by-word translation I had as my first thought and aim, to attempt to uncover what I had previously not known about. Among these truths that I discovered are the secrets of giving, of worship and praise, of God's great kindness, of God's concern for the poor, of God's attitude towards the proud, of David's concern about what he himself says, and then that he desires the LORD Himself to speak and change things that need to be changed. I have named this translation of the Psalms the "Pursue Version" and have attempted to look at each word in turn and chose an English word which is different.I am sure that you will find great inspiration from these wonderful Psalms, and fresh inspiration, just as I did in writing this work.
