Registered Nurse to Rear Admiral
註釋Alene B. Duerk, Registered Nurse, is the first woman to reach an Admiral's rank in the US Navy. Her career as a nurse begins in Ohio. She is soon on board the hospital ship, USS Benevolence, as it heads to the waters of Japan. After WWII ends, she continues her education and decides to leave civilian life and to return to the Navy to use her medical and organizational skills. Congress gives the Navy permission to promote a woman to the rank of Rear Admiral; however, it takes the Navy men nearly five years to promote a woman to that high rank. The Navy selects Alene Duerk, a registered nurse to be the first woman Rear Admiral. Her service to the Navy continues for many years and in many Navy bases around the world until her death at age ninety-eight.
