註釋John Downey was born in Castlesampson, County Roscommon, Ireland. He sailed for America as a young schoolboy in the 1840's. After completing his education in the East, he went to the gold fields of California. He became a founding father of what is today the metropolis of Los Angeles and became governor of the state of California.
