註釋
This dissertation is a program development of an expressive-art therapy program for children entitled, Integrative Expressive Therapy (IET). IET is a multimodal expressive therapy program in that it encompasses four art modalities including art, music, dance, and drama in child therapy. The following pages discuss the supporting literature of a multimodal expressive approach to therapy and the IET program. Today American children suffer from many forms of mental illness, but are often psychologically cared for under the umbrella of acceptable adult treatment methods and interventions. According to the Surgeon General's report from the Conference on Children's Mental Health-- Children's Mental Health: A National Action Agenda-- many children perform poorly with modern mental health treatments (Weisz, 2001). This may be, in part, because they lack the ability to verbally communicate in therapy (Irwin,1986). Simpson (2001) has also noticed that families lack access to appropriate mental health treatments designed specifically for children. Expressive therapy is an option for children that may often be ignored by parents, educators, and primary care physicians (Rubenstein, 2004). Integrative Expressive Therapy (IET) offers a creative approach to treatment for children in order to increase verbal and non-verbal communication, assist in the establishment of a therapeutic alliance, lower defenses, and ultimately produce positive emotional and behavioral change in children. Offering only one mode for creative expression, or perhaps none at all, is a weakness in other child-therapy programs for multiple reasons. A multimodal approach broadens the programs niche of client's, increases the programs referral rates, and creates a client-centered approach to therapy (Rubenstein, 2004). At Integrative Expressive Therapy (IET), a multimodal approach is used for these reasons.
