註釋William Johnston (1648-1719) of the Isle of Wight County, Virginia, married Sarah Griffeth, daughter of Owen Griffeth. They had at least four sons. Descendants listed, chiefly descendants of his grandson, Jacob Johnston, lived in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and elsewhere. Jacob Johnston (ca. 1714-1781) was born in what is now Southampton County, Virginia, the son of Benjamin Johnston (ca. 1693-1767). He died in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. Some descendants spelled their name Johnson.
