註釋
Although the arrangement and coverage of this second edition follow the pattern of the first, many sections and some chapters have been rewritten. Emphasis on conceptual aspects of the subject has been increased; that on formal dexterity, somewhat diminished. The problem lists have been culled and enlarged, and more difficult problems placed near the ends of the lists. Applications continue to be an integral part of the exposition. A major objective is to impart an appreciation of the differential equation as an idealization for rate problems in a diversity of fields, with enough of the rationale of model building so that such problems will not appear as afterthoughts. Among those changes in the present text are an expanded treatment of rocket propulsion and a brief introduction both to difference equations and to differential equations with time lag. The book is intended as an introductory text; it does not develop existence theory or other topics from advanced analysis. Chapters 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 constitute a self-contained brief course. Other chapters are largely independent of each other, permitting the teacher to select various combinations of them. Since student preparation varies in quality, content, and date, the Appendixes have been expanded to help fill some of the gaps; the brief numerical tables are an added convenience.
