註釋
With the exception of the first justice profiled here, John M. Harlan, Supreme Court justices generally voted for the government and against freedom prior to the 1920s. With the appointment of Justice Louis D. Brandeis, votes for and opinions about freedom became more prevalent. However it was not until the appointments of Chief Justice Earl Warren, and such associate justices as William J. Brennan, Jr., and Thurgood Marshall that the court consistently voted against government infringement on individual rights. These five justices and four others (Charles Evans Hughes, Hugo L. Black, William O. Douglas and Frank Murphy) steadfastly supported First Amendment and other Bill of Rights freedoms and protections. The votes and opinions of the nine justices are the central focus, and a brief biography is provided for each.
