Nixon: The triumph of a politician, 1962-1972
註釋This is the second of the author's projected three-volume biography of Nixon. Beginning with Nixon's short-lived political retirement, when he worked as a successful corporate lawyer in New York, Ambrose relates how he reinserted himself into the political mainstream by speaking out on the issues of the day and criticizing the Democrats. He describes Nixon's first term as President, rising tensions in the Middle East, and the bloody stalemate in Southeast Asia. He also tells how Nixon achieved goals that were beyond his predecessors with the help of Kissinger. He opened the door to China, established detente with the Soviet Union, and got the first Cold War arms control agreement, while simultaneously withdrawing from Vietnam. Ambrose leaves his protagonist in melancholy, with the rumors of Watergate beginning to spread. ISBN 0-671-52837-8: $24.95.
