Церковные стенные росписи Ростова Великого и Ростовского уезда ХVIII - начала ХХ века
註釋The publication catalogues for the first time the interior wall- paintings of all the churches of the city and region of Rostov. The authors have ascertained many facts about church art of the period: dates of construction and consecration of churches, dates of the paintings, names of the artists (when possible gleaned from written documents or inferred from sylistic elements), who commissioned the paintings, when they were restored or overpainted. Illustrations reproduce many works, and schemes indicate the original layout of the complex ensembles. From the abundant documentation, written and visual, the authors interpret the changes in church painting during the eighteenth and nineteenth century, explaining how compositions and styles differed from those of the Moscovite and Early Russian periods and noting incidents when the pull of past tradition led to archaic forms. They also delve into the subtle question of restoring church painting: how much of the original was preserved and to what extent did a monumental painting become a substantively new work by different painters in a different era? -- Summary written by John W. Emerich, Bronze Horseman Literary Agency.
