The EIB has been active in Turkey since the mid 1960s. Total lending in the country as at January 2005 stood at EUR 3.6 bn (of which EUR 2.2 bn since 2001), reflecting the Bank's commitment to supporting the country's economic development. Beneficiaries of EIB funds include the public and private sectors: central and local government, local banks and industry as well as foreign investors. Against the background of the upcoming membership negotiations with Turkey in October 2005, the EIB will step up and widen its lending activities.
