Educating the Engineer of the Twenty-first Century
註釋This thesis examines the ongoing tug-of-war between technical and professional skills in civil engineering education. In recent years there has been a push from the industry for engineers to have better developed leadership and management skills so that they are more prepared for professional practice upon graduation. To achieve this, some educators have proposed revamping engineering education by incorporating broader topics into engineering curriculum, and making it less technically intensive. However, those who value technical skills may worry that doing this will "water down" the curriculum and produce "soft" engineers who are not technically competent. Some also argue that professional skills are best learned on the job; therefore it is a waste of resources to teach them to students.
