A Chronicle of American Music, 1700-1995
註釋"The current tome is dedicated to the furtherance of American music, especially in that field that the author chooses to identify as the "Cultivated / Art Music" scene. No book on American music can ignore the presence of popular music, which falls here under the category of the "Vernacular / Commercial" scene. There can be no doubt in today's world that most facets of popular music, from folk to rock, are under the control of big business, therefore the addition of the term "commercial" to identify this field. It should be pointed out that the emphasis in this volume is on the art music of the United States, with only the highlights of the popular scene included. The volume is arranged chronologically with brief highlights of history, world cultural highlights, and representative works of American art and literature. Emphasis here is especially on those literary or art works that have a direct bearing on music as well. The Vernacular / Commercial Music Scene is divided into five categories: Births ; Deaths ; Biographical : Performing Groups, New Beginnings (festivals, companies, and so on), Honors (entries here are limited), Miscellaneous (mostly items of a more personal nature) ; Publications (important entries bearing on all aspects of the popular field) ; Representative Pieces of Music : Musicals (mainly by American composers, but containing the US premieres of other important works), Songs / Number One Hits. The Cultivated / Art Music Scene is divided into nine sections: Births ; Deaths ; Debuts : United States (with field of performance and place of debut), Metropolitan Opera (since some consider a Metropolitan Opera debut to be the high point of one's career, Met debuts are listed separately, giving the nationality and field of performance), Other (these are American performers with place of initial debut outside the United States) ; New Positions : Conductors, Educational, Other (critics, residencies, organists, and so on) ; Honors and Awards : Honors (given independently to honor the individual's accomplishments), Awards (given as a result of winning a prestigious competition) ; Biographical (short items of a more personal nature concerning musical personalities) ; Musical Beginnings : Performing Groups (school and civic groups as well as professional organizations), Festivals, Educational, Other (publications, music businesses of all kinds, and miscellaneous material) ; Publications (generally speaking, individual biographies are not included, but other important works of music history, music theory, and philosophy of music are given) ; Musical Compositions (the date given is, as far as possible to ascertain, the year of composition; the compositions have been listed alphabetically by composer followed by the title and any award received and arranged in the following order: Chamber Music, Choral / Vocal Music, Concertos, Electronic, Operas, Orchestra / Band, Piano / Organ, Symphonies)."--
