註釋
Describes two case studies of projects carried out to determine whether manufactured housing could provide affordable home ownership for low income households and households on social assistance. The two cases involved existing properties near Sydney, Nova Scotia. One case rehabilitated a deteriorated privately-owned trailer park and the other developed a former military base. The low income groups ordered a large number of manufactured homes in bulk to minimize costs, and a provincial community services ministry absorbed the staff costs for the project. The down payment was funded through the provincial goods and services tax rebate for which manufactured homes are eligible, and no additional subsidies or funding was used. The projects are analyzed with regard to affordability, group capacity, organizational support, the holistic approach used, financial feasibility, and social impact on participants. On the basis of the results, recommendations are made to ensure the success of groups using the projects' model of home ownership.
