The mechanism of age hardening in the 17-7PH and PH15-7Mo stainless steels was studied by electron microscopy and "selected area" electron diffraction using direct-transmission thin-foil techniques and the extracted-particle carbon-replica techniques. The precipitates in the specimens aged from 6 to 24 hr at 1050 F were NiAl, and at 100 hr they were NiAl and Ni3Al. The presence of these precipitates was indicated by moiré patterns, round disks, and strain areas.
