Letters from Albania
註釋Mary Edith Durham fought tirelessly for Albanian independence and her practical help and support for the tribes of northern Albania earned her the title of the 'Queen of the Mountains'. Her writing from the Balkans is characterized by a depth of understanding of the people of the region, lively and perceptive anecdotes as well as her exasperation at the governments of the western powers which had a tendency to ignore reports of the plight of the Albanian people. This book contains over 800 previously unpublished letters from Durham in Albania to friends and family back in England, as well as her correspondence with those in positions of authority – diplomats, politicians and journalists. Together, they provide a unique record of a crucial period in Albanian history from the perspective on an extraordinarily active and influential individual.
