Dimensionless Graphs of Floods from Ruptured Dams
註釋Dams are subject to failure and the damages produced by the resulting flood are extensive. Alleviation or prevention of the damaging effects requires the knowledge of the flood characteristics. These include primarily the time of arrival of the flood-wave front, the maximum flood level and the time at which the maximum flood level occurs after dam failure. Using a rational computation technique, based on the method of characteristics, dimensionless graphs of the aforementioned flood characteristics were prepared for a prismatic channel of general parabolic cross section and several values of the parameters involved. These values were selected to cover the practical range of the field conditions affecting the magnitude of the dam-break flood. Results were obtained for such periods of time that the flood peak advanced adequately down-stream and either subsided or stabilized considerably. (Author).
