註釋In 1994 the history department at Brigham Young University--Hawaii inaugurated a distinguished lecture series under the general topic of "Faith and Intellect." Four lectures would be given during one week each year and the the lectures would be published by the college. The author was asked to spearhead the project and the first four lectures were delivered in May, 1994. This book is an expansion on the lectures and includes three additional chapters, introductory material, and concluding comments. The central purpose of the lectures and the expanded book was to sketch the lives and thoughts of outstanding Latter-day Saints who possessed both faith and intellect.
