Another Think Coming
註釋This novel is about a man whose life is unremittingly awful. Every single event that befalls him on this odyssey goes the wrong way. Whether he is doomed by the Gods or the author of his own misfortune is for the reader to decide, but he certainly doesn't help the cause - he is a hopeless gambler, bitter and regretful. Hector Somes, narrates us through one calendar year of his life during which he moves from property owning and prosperous to destitute. In his despair to change his lot and to move on in life his awful decisions only serve to make it worse. He is flawed but he is not a fool. He is Everyman. His observations of middle management life will make you laugh out loud, his descriptions of the desolate agony of gambling will make you wince. The novel eventually turns full circle and brings us back to where we began one year ago with Hector now one of the down and outs that he detested at the outset, to make true one of his earliest observations: that the Roads of Hell really do lead in circles
