It was decided to examine the effects of soil physical properties on the growth of yellow birch before pursuing the nutrition studies any farther. The purpose was twofold: first to better understand the influence of physical properties themselves; and second, to be able to make some allowance for physical effects when evaluating the effects of chemical and micro-organism factors.
